Dental Exams & Cleanings
Exam
A comprehensive dental exam will be performed by your dentist at your initial visit. At regular check-up exams, your dentist and hygienist will perform the following:
Examination of xrays. This is essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts and bone loss.
Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
Evaluation of gums and bone around teeth for signs of periodontal disease.
Teeth surfaces will be checked for decay as well as checking of existing restorations.
Professional Dental Cleaning
Your professional dental cleaning will be performed by a Registered Dental Hygienist. This will include a dental exam as well as:
Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is the hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky substance that forms on teeth every 12 hours. It is made of bacteria, food debris, and saliva. This bacteria causes inflammation of the gums called gingivitis which can lead to periodontal disease if not effectively removed on a regular basis.
Teeth polishing: Removal of stain and light plaque after scaling.

Periodontal Maintenance
Supportive periodontal therapy is specialized, ongoing dental care designed to manage gum disease after initial treatment. It involves 3-4 month intervals to deep clean above and below the gum line to remove bacteria, preventing disease recurrence and tooth loss.
Child Prophylaxis
We see children as young as three years old for their first dental cleaning. We acclimate them to our office in a very gentle manner. The prize box awaits them when they are done!
