Care of the Mouth Following an Extraction
Proper care of the surgical extraction site will greatly aid in the healing process.
1. BITE ON THE GAUZE PACKING FOR ONE FULL HOUR. This will help establish a firm clot in the socket.
2. DO NOT RINSE YOUR MOUTH FOR 24 HOURS. You may drink, but do not rinse.
3. DO NOT SUCK THROUGH A STRAW OR SPIT. Sucking will dislodge the clot out of the socket.
4. DISCONTINUE SMOKING IMMEDIATELY AFTER SURGERY. Smoking will slow down the healing process. It can also dislodge the clot, possibly causing a dry socket.
5. KEEP FOOD PARTICLES OUT OF THE SOCKET. Chew on the other side of your mouth. Eat a soft diet.
6. KEEP FINGERS AND TONGUE AWAY FROM EXTRACTION SITE.
7. NO HEAVY EXERTION OR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR 24 HOURS.
8. AVOID EXTREME TEMPERATURE FOODS AND DRINKS. Nothing too hot or too cold.
IN CASE OF PROLONGED BLEEDING
Roll up gauze and place it firmly over the socket and bite for one hour. If gauze is not available, you can use a plain tea bag. Apply new gauze as needed.
IN CASE OF PAIN
For a simple extraction, Ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil) will relieve the discomfort. You may be given a prescription for pain. A prescription may cause drowsiness and upset stomach if not taken with milk or soft foods.
SWELLING
Swelling for the first 24 hours after surgery is normal. If additional swelling occurs later, it may be an infection. CALL THE OFFICE IMMEDIATELY 248-689-9191. Cold packs may prevent swelling. Use ice for 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off for the first few hours after surgery. Warm packs may be used the next day to reduce swelling. Warm salt water rinses, very gently, may be used after 24 hours after the extraction.
FEVER
